Their research, deemed “nonessential” and quietly starved of funding by Trumpy Bird, had reached its breaking point. The Scientist Werewolf abandoned Onyx City without ceremony or regret.

Salvation—or so it seemed—came in the form of Fritz Rattery, a rat of unsettling intellect who offered them a place in his private research. The journey to reach him was anything but trivial. From the savage ridges of Devil’s Peaks, across the blue spines of the Onyx Mountains, through the desolate Expanse of Misery, and into the festering ruin known as Carcass, every step tested endurance, judgment, and luck.

They arrived nonetheless—worn thin, dehydrated, and barely holding form—dragging themselves into Fritz Rattery’s matchbox laboratory with the last of their strength.

It was a mistake.

Fritz had no interest in collaboration. Only opportunity.

Without warning or consent, he administered his latest formulation. The effect was immediate and irreversible: their body convulsed, restructured, and redefined itself along entirely new biological parameters. By the time the process stabilized, the transformation was complete.

Fritz recorded the results, declared success, and dismissed them.

Payment came in the form of a single rib-eye steak and a bottle of Devil’s Whiskey—barely enough to sustain the long road ahead.

Alone again, and altered in ways both profound and permanent, the Werewolf chose not to break.

They turned back toward Onyx City.

This time, not as a supplicant—but with intent. Their journey had tempered them. Their suffering had clarified something essential: knowledge without ethics was rot. They would build something better. A practice grounded not in exploitation, but in care.

And when they returned, Trumpy Bird would learn—quietly, inevitably—that neglect breeds consequences, and that truth does not remain buried forever.
